Comprehensive Eye Exams

At Garland Vision Source, we believe that optimal eye care includes a comprehensive evaluation of the eye that utilizes the latest technology and provides a thorough test of your visual status once a year. Our eye care and vision correction are attained through an understanding of the eye taken as a whole picture of health. By reviewing your medical background, testing the eye's capabilities, and assessing the health of the eye; Dr. Hagen and our staff can provide you with a comprehensive analysis of your vision and ocular health.

For both preventative and curative treatment, comprehensive eye exams are the key. Schedule an appointment and guarantee your sight for the future.

During a comprehensive eye examination, Doctor Hagen applies a variety of tests and procedures to examine your eyes. These tests range from simply reading letters from an eye chart to examining the structure of your eye using a high powered lens that visualizes the tiny structures within your eyes. Each phase of the exam process evaluates the eye in a new way using a variety of technological elements. Combined, these tests provide a conclusive and comprehensive assessment of the health of your eye.

A standard procedure for our patients is the Visual Acuity Test. This test is designed to measure the sharpness of your vision. Both near and far vision can be evaluated by having patients read off eye charts from a distance and close up. Another important pre-lim test applied is the Color Vision Test. This screening process checks your eyes ability to accept and distinguish colors. It can detect hereditary color vision deficiencies and alert the doctor to possible eye health problems that could affect your color vision.

To check how your eyes work together, Doctor Hagen uses the Cover Test. By having the patient focus on a small object at a distance and alternate covering each eye and reciting what they see. Through this process, the doctor can diagnose certain eye conditions including strabismus, the turning in or out of the eye, or binocular vision, ability of your eyes to work together; by observing any eye movements of the uncovered eye on the target.

Also provided under our care is a Visual Field Test which tests for blind spots in your peripheral vision. These blind spots can originate from eye diseases such as glaucoma. Scotomas, or blind spots, can also be first signs of major medical issues like stroke or a tumor.

Retinoscopy is another test performed early in the exam to approximate your eye glasses prescription. Doctor Hagen places various combinations of lenses in front of the eye while shining a soft light at the eye. Based on how the light reflects from the eye, the doctor can estimate the patient's prescription for glasses. This test is extremely precise and is especially useful with some of our nonverbal patients.

To determine a patient's exact prescription, the doctor conducts a Refraction. Placing a device called a Phoropter in front of the patients eyes; Doctor Hagen asks which of several lens options provides a clearer, sharper image. This process continues until it is fined tuned to an exact prescription. This test also establishes the patient's level of farsightedness known as hyperopia, nearsightedness known as myopia, astigmatism, and/or presbyopia.

An autorefractor is a screening devise that can also be used to help determine your prescription. An autorefractor, determines the lens power required to accurately focus light on your retina. This advanced method improves accuracy and efficiency. The auto refraction takes only a few seconds, and the results obtained from this automated test allow Doctor Hagen to perform a subjective refraction and verify your prescription.

To evaluate the health your eyes, Doctor Hagen performs a biomicroscope examination to get a magnified view of the front part of the eye. This view can show signs of infection or disease and is an important assessment of ocular health.

Dilation of the eye's pupils can be necessary if the doctor desires a deeper look into the retina of the eye. Using dilating drops to enlarge your pupils, conditions such as macular degeneration, retinal detachments, optic nerve swelling, vitreous infections, glaucoma, cataracts and a variety of others can be identified. Early detection of these conditions can help minimize dangerous long term effects such as vision loss. These drops tend to make your eyes light sensitive as dilated pupils let in a lot of excess light. Because of this, many patients find it difficult to focus on objects up close. The drops should wear off in just a few hours. We provide complimentary disposable sunglasses for patients who receive pupil dilation to minimize light sensitivity as they leave our office.

In our effort to remain as current as possible in technological advancements to provide optimal care to our patients, Garland Vision Source has recently included Optos's new Optomap Retinal Scanner as part of our improved patient care. The optomap technology provides us with a significantly improved view of a patients retina. A simple Optomap scan is an important tool for the screening, early detection and diagnosis of a number of eye conditions including retinal detachment, glaucoma, cataracts, retinal holes/retinal tears and age-related macular degeneration. It can also indicate evidence of non-eye related diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension and certain cancers.
